Welcome to birdfluexplained, your information resource on bird flu (also known as avian influenza).

Avian Influenza is a disease of birds that continues to pose a threat to commercial poultry flocks and wild birds both in the UK and around the world. There have been a number of outbreaks in the last few years of high pathogenicity and low pathogencity avian influenza virus in the UK.

In each case it has been demonstrated that there are clear procedures in place to identify, control and eradicate the disease without posing any risk to public health, under the direction of Defra and with the support of the Food Standards Authority (FSA) and the Health Protection Agency (HPA).

However we know there is no room for complacency and feel it is important that everyone understands the history of bird flu, how precautions can be put in place and how the poultry industry is combating the disease. We also want to share what we have learnt, as widely as possible, with other poultry producers around the world.

I hope you will find this website both informative and helpful, and if you have any further questions about bird flu or Bernard Matthews Farms, please don't hesitate to email me at info@bernardmatthews.com

Yours faithfully,
